The Maharashtra State Government holds a state level drama competition every year for about last forty years. It is a phenomenon in itself. Atul participated in this competition from 1989 to 1992 and won 5 Best Actor Awards and 1 Best Director Award in these competitions.

The play 'Gandhi Viruddha Gandhi' gave Atul 8 Best Actor Awards for the year 1996. It is a record in Marathi Professional Theatre.
   
 
Atul received his first National Award For Best Actor In A Supporting Role in the year 1999 for the film Hey Ram.
